What is the CGYPP 2021 Topic?

Ways out of the crisis: The Covid-19 pandemic has all of a sudden turned our lives upside down. Our society has switched to crisis mode, newspapers and political speeches are dominated by Covid-19, its worldwide implications and consequences. But what kind of crisis are we actually facing right now? And what are possible ways to overcome it? The pandemic has brought to light a whole range of multi-faceted challenges. Not only are we witnessing the worst economic crisis since the depression of the 1930s. We are also confronted with a deficient health care system. More than ever before we are experiencing the urgent need to catch up in terms of digitization – also in the educational sector. To some extent, we are facing a lack of solidarity within the European Union. Is the Covid-19 pandemic the accelerator of deglobalization? If so, is it a big threat for Germany and the Czech Republic? And finally, the number of those who feel left behind and restricted in their personal freedoms is increasing, which has led to a certain crisis of confidence in our democratic system. First immediate measures have been taken, focusing particularly on restoring the economic strength. The task is now to develop long-term strategies. But do we really want to return to the status quo ante? Or are we willing to rethink our traditional answers when facing new challenges and questions?

The European Union’s answer to the crisis is the coronavirus recovery plan. It foresees €390bn in grants and €360bn in loans for struggling EU states. The EU has finally agreed on taking on common debt – and is thinking about raising common taxes, such as a Europe-wide financial transaction tax, a digital tax or a carbon tax, in order to finance it.

These and other topical questions will be addressed at the 12th year of the CGYPP. We want to discuss the challenges posed by the current crisis and possible answers creatively, interactively and polemically in a Czech-German context, with a wide range of political and economic leaders, leading journalists and experts – and we want to share our insights with the general public. We are convinced that – especially now that Czech-German dialogue is disrupted by the pandemic – debate is more important than ever.
