What impact does the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic have on politics in Central Europe? Especially in the Czech Republic and Germany with parliamentary elections scheduled later this year? To what extent were the epidemic measures influenced by political marketing and the pressure of public opinion and to what extent by the voice of experts? Will the performance of their governments vis-à-vis the epidemic be the main theme of this year’s elections in both countries?

These and other topical questions will be addressed at the online public event organised within the 12th year of the Czech-German Young Professionals Program (CGYPP) with Jiří Pehe. Host of the event is Zuzana Lizcová.

Jiří Pehe is a Czech political scientist and author of several books and articles. Currently, he is the Director of New York University in Prague. He graduated from the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Law at Charles University in Prague. Later on, he emigrated to the United States, where he gained a degree in International relations from Columbia University. Jiří is also head of the Prague Institute for Democracy and Culture at New York University. Regularly, he writes articles and analytical studies on developments in Eastern Europe for American, Czech, and German dailies and scientific journals.

Zuzana Lizcová is a head of German and Austrian Studies Dpt. (Charles University Prague) and freelance journalist. She focuses on German speaking countries, their international influence and bilateral relations with the Czech Republic. She served as Czech coordinator of CGYPP (2017-2019) and stays in touch with the program as mentor and alumna.

CGYPP is an international network for young experts, multipliers, movers and shakers from Germany and the Czech Republic. Program is organised by AMO (Association for International Affairs) and European Academy Berlin (EAB). The CGYPP is initiated and financed by the Czech-German Fund for the Future. The online seminar is co-funded by the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung in the Czech Republic.
